Landfall Foundation Announces Grants for 99 non-profits, surpassing $7.3 million in Donations to Local Organizations

On November 2, 2023, the Landfall Foundation presented $550,000 in grant checks for projects at 99 Cape Fear nonprofits and schools. Earlier this year, the Foundation awarded $78,600 in Capital Grants along with scholarships to Landfall employees. The Foundation has raised over $7.3 million since its creation in 1995.

This year, the Foundation made the decision to increase the maximum individual award from $7500 to $10,000 with several non-profits receiving that amount this year. Grants were awarded  in three categories – the Arts, Education and Health & Welfare. For 2023, $109,810 was awarded to 26 organizations for Arts based projects. Health & Welfare’s 46 projects received $208,035 while Education grants totaling $232,155 were given to 57 non-profits or schools. The November 2nd event at the Country Club of Landfall featured guest speaker and grantee Susan Lewis, Executive Director of the Community Counselling Center. The $7,000 grant supporting the Community Counseling Center will allow more uninsured, underinsured, or those unable to afford mental health care through in-depth psychotherapy. The ripple effects of Ms. Lewis’ grant parallels the impact of other diverse organizations funded by the Foundation including the Boys & Girls Clubs of SE NC, YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear, Young Science Academy, Canines for Service, Good Shepherd and Meals on Wheels.

YWCA – the project attacks the top cause of children’s death drowning, especially for low-income and minority children. An Australian-based learn-to-swim program specializing in swim lessons for 3 months to 3-year-olds. The $10,000 grant will increase participation increase capacity from 75 children to 126 children per year.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of SE NC – This $10,000 grant will support professional training by a Certified Training Instructor for 25 staff to provide academic support for up to 750 kids, 6–18-year-old, at 3 centers in New Hanover County.

Young Scientist Academy – Funds after-school STEM activities for 120 3rd to 8th grade students from Title 1 schools. The program uses science and technology as tools for solving social and environmental issues in our community including career mentorship, science enrichment, and research experiences. The $9,300 grant helps 120 youth each week enroll in the Sidewalk Science, Field Science Ambassadors and Tech Team (coding and computer engineering) programs.

Canines for Service - Focuses on training canines to provide services to the public and the workforce at the fire and police stations.   The $5,000 Foundation grant focuses on the Canines for Therapy program targeting underfunded human and mental health needs of in school-aged children and those over 65 in eighty Cape Fear facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, libraries, and schools.

Good Shepherd - Funding will provide to-go containers for 300 daily hot meals. The all-volunteer soup kitchen provides over 100,000 free hot meals annually to the 90+ homeless men, women, and children staying in the Night Shelter with 300 individuals coming daily for lunch alone. This $7,000 grant supports Good Shepherd's post-Covid increased demand by covering supply costs, including to-go containers, silverware, and cleaning products.

Meals on Wheels – The Foundation’s $6,000 grant provides Holiday Meals to 3,600 home bound citizens during five Holidays when the weekday home delivery program is closed.  These citizens not only receive meals but also a friendly face and visits from volunteers.
